Influenza B: What You Need to Know

Flu season is here, and with all the holiday travel, cases of influenza B are already popping up! This virus causes symptoms like fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, cough, and fatigue. Kids may also experience nausea or vomiting.

Treatment? Focus on rest, hydration, and symptom relief with paracetamol or ibuprofen. High-risk groups, especially young children, may need antiviral medication to prevent complications. If you or your child are at high risk and have been exposed, medications like Tamiflu can also be taken as prevention—but make sure to discuss this with your GP or paediatrician first.

The best prevention? Get your annual flu shot! It helps protect you and the most vulnerable, like young children and the elderly. Also, wash your hands regularly and stay home when you're sick to stop the spread.

More thoughts from the allergy clinic 💭 Many moms are advised to rub the allergen on the skin before introducing it in the mouth to see whether the child is allergic… we actually ADVISE STRONGLY AGAINST this. This is because: 1. A skin reaction doesn’t necessarily tell us that the child is allergic (it can be an irritant reaction) and 2. more concerning, introducing an allergen through the skin can actually cause an allergy, especially in kids with eczema. This is because our skin is primed to keep foreign invaders out! While our gut is primed to accept all kinds of foreign things. So please introduce foods through the mouth first and try and avoid the skin!

Frustration Tolerance: the capacity to persevere even when struggling. 🫣

A very important and often overlooked skill:

Here we see Meadow engaging in a Fine Motor Activity, she is practicing her pincer grasp, release and place. However, what’s going on “social-emotional” is Meadow is building frustration tolerance, she is persevering and no adult is intervening offering to do it for her or to aid her.

When children are struggling but not in danger, we as adults need to step back and allow the child to figure it out, rather than rescuing the situation. If your child would like your help to complete the activity they will ask you to help them.

Remember it’s not the end product but the process where learning takes place.🫡
